Starry stonewort is a freshwater green algae that grows in thick mats at the top of water surfaces. The dense growth can displace other plant life and can be harmful to fish and animals living in or around the same body of water. In the United States, starry stonewart is found in bodies of water in Michigan's Lower Penninsula, New York, Indiana and Southeastern Wisconsin.
