Definition of Nitrate Removal Facility

The Des Moines Water Works operates one of the few nitrate removal facilities in the country, in order to reduce the dangerously high levels of nitrates found in their municipal water supply largely due to agricultural runoff. A nitrate removal facility removes nitrates from the water through an ion-exchange process using a sodium chloride-coated resin material. After nitrates are removed from the water supply, they are returned back to the river.
