Anyone who picks leftover fruit or other crops that would have otherwise gone to waste, in farmers’ fields, orchards, residential neighborhoods or elsewhere. Rescued food harvested by gleaners is typically donated to people in need. Since the 1990s, many non-profit, volunteer-based gleaning organizations have sprung up, such as City Fruit in Seattle and Boston Area Gleaners in Massachusetts.
