Agroforestry for Food Security
Agroforestry is increasingly being championed for its contribution to food security around the world. Low-input agroforestry systems are often favored by cash-strapped women around the world, and agroforestry systems provide a number of globally important products. Agroforestry systems can provide food directly, fuel for cooking, income to support food access, and improve ecosystem benefits that support crop production. While dependence on a single commodity tree crop has the potential to undermine food security, mixed agroforestry systems dependent on diverse production systems can avoid this trap.
The Overstory provides a great in-depth exploration of agroforestry and its role in providing food security, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa.
