Comfood: The Daily Dose of Sustainable Agriculture News
Naomi Starkman of Civil Eats blows the lid on a quietly growing e-list catering to food systems professionals, students, and activists. The COMFOOD listserv is an invaluable resource for those working on community food security and food system research as it enables groups and individuals to share news, facilitate national and international discussions, and more recently, attempts to influence policy. The e-list was created by Hugh Joseph of Tufts University almost twenty years ago, and continues to be administered by the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy.
Despite its popularity, the listserv gains members usually through word of mouth of those involved in food system circles (although this article might blow its cover). Today, it has more than 2500 subscribers and provides a platform for a great variety of topics that are posted daily. While the format of a listserv may seem outdated almost twenty years later, COMFOOD is still the place to find a ready-made community of professionals involved in sustainable agriculture and food systems work. Try subscribing for a few days to see how the list works!
