Food Security & Access

Although there are several different working definitions of food security, all of which have evolved over time, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations currently uses the following description: “Food security exists when all people, at all times, have physical, social and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food which meets their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life.” A similar definition has also been adopted by the US, though in a more limited form. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA)’s definition of food security is, “access by all people at all times to enough food for an active, healthy life.” Food security comprises several different components, including food access, distribution of food, the stability of the food supply, and the use of food. The opposite of food security — food insecurity — is defined by the USDA as, “a household-level economic and social condition of limited or uncertain access to adequate food.” To learn more about food security, please click here.
