Pros and Cons of No-Till Farming
Though no-till farming does preserve topsoil and ensure that soil organic matter is being enriched, it doesn’t come without trade-offs. Why are tilling and plowing so popular, despite there not being scientific evidence proving its benefits? For whatever reason, at one point it was determined that it w beneficial to till soil to ensure better soil drainage. However, modern plows actually compact the soil so much, that they cause soil compaction from rainfall, which, in turn, produces harder topsoil, less nutrient-rich soil. In order to ensure that soils are enriched and roots are able to grow deeply into the soil, less-destructive, no-till practices should be employed.
