Where I work
Steve Whitmire was born in the mountains of Western North Carolina to a family that's been farming the same region since the late 1700's. In addition to farming livestock on their family land, his father taught agriculture and his mother taught science. In the early 1950's, Steve's father, E.J. Whitmire, began acquiring further land and rehabilitating a number of tracts that had been used to dump trash. E.J. established a legacy of environmental stewardship and conservation that Steve and his children, the third generation, continue today. When his father was killed by a bull in 1998, Steve took over the farm and established a leading Angus and Braunvieh seedstock operation. To date, the farm has won numerous environmental and cattle industry awards, and Steve has served as President of the Beef Improvement Federation. Currently, Steve serves as a member of the Georgia Cattlemen's Legislative Committee and spends the majority of his time on the farm just over two hours north of Atlanta and southwest of Asheville, NC. Brasstown Beef can be found in Ingles, Whole Foods Market stores throughout the South Region, and restaurants, butcher shops, and specialty markets that support local farms throughout the South.
