Shift Change: Putting Democracy to Work

Shift Change, a recent documentary by Melissa Young and Mark Dworkin, highlights worker cooperatives in North America and Mondragon, Spain. As people all over the world become increasingly disillusioned with the dominant economic system, worker cooperatives, where workers own and make decisions about the company they work for, are an economically viable option that people are looking towards more and more.

Among the cooperatives highlighted in the film are Equal Exchange, a Boston worker-owner fair trade coffee roaster that sources coffee and other goods from coops worldwide; Arizmendi Bakeries, a network of worker-owned bakeries San Francisco Bay Area; WAGES, an Oakland-based non-profit that trains women to form green house cleaning cooperatives; Isthmus Engineering and Manufacturing, a Madison worker-owned company that builds custom automation equipment; and Evergreen Cooperatives, a network of a worker-owner laundry service, worker-owned solar business, and worker-owned farmed in Cleveland that is supported by local institutions and is influencing cities across the country.

What an awesome film! Hope it comes to Sonoma!
