How Does Fair Trade Fit Into the Globalized Economy?

In his TEDx talk "Awakening the Sleeping Giant: Fair Trade on Campus," Paul Rice, President and CEO of Fair Trade USA, discusses how fair trade fits into modern globalization. He describes his own introduction into this system, after his experiences in Nicaragua. Rice explains the social and environmental benefits that fair trade tries to implement in various countries. Rice suggests that aware consumers want to purchase ethical products that are good for people and good for the environment; he explains that fair trade products are just that, portraying the certification as a way for American consumers to make a difference. This talk promulgates the idea that economic prosperity doesn't have to be achieved at the expense of others; rather, it is something that can go hand-in-hand with positive development in other nations.
