Since 1928, the Calvary Episcopal Church in Memphis, Tennessee, has hosted a “Waffle Shop” during the Lenten season each spring. Staffed by volunteers, the popular Waffle Shop sells homemade plate lunches (and yes, waffles) to hundreds of eager congregants and community members every weekday of Lent. With 85 years of history, and open only 40 days a year, the Calvary Waffle Shop might be the South’s oldest pop-up restaurant.
