Agricultural runoff is water that leaves a farm due to irrigation, rain or melted snow. If land is managed sustainably, such as by using conservation practices to reduce soil erosion, then agricultural runoff will be clean. Land is often managed improperly, however, and agricultural runoff can contain nitrates, sediment, antibiotic residues, pesticides and other contaminants.
