Everyone wants food security, because no one wants to run out of food! The key to food security lies with seeds, because at some level literally all food starts with seeds. As the world awakens from its decades-long hallucination of industrial agriculture, local ownership of seed becomes central to the new paradigm of sane, sustainable food production. Open-pollinated crop varieties are the mainstay of sustainability, because true-to-type seed can be saved from them season after season. Heirlooms are open-pollinated types that have stood the test of time! Individuals can participate by learning a few basic techniques, and saving seed from their favorite varieties. By saving and replanting seeds of only their best plants over the years, regionally-adapted strains develop, able to thrive and produce in the vary bioregion in which they developed. It doesn't take an advanced degree, either—it just requires perseverance and attention to detail. Once local seed-saving becomes prevalent, there are so many ways to leverage individual efforts into advancement for everyone. Seed swaps allow growers to share the best of each other's efforts, resulting in continued crop improvement. Seed libraries are another way of sharing seeds and increasing them, putting them into the eager hands of an ever-widening circle of growers. Seed banks enhance seed security, whether they consist of a few treasured varieties in the deep freeze or squirreled away in the closet, or whether they are of local, regional or world-wide provenance. It all falls into place naturally, and it starts with the seed!
